While living in Geauga Ohio Philena was working in the fields one day where she was gathering corn. While walking home she was followed by three bears. She threw them some corn to eat and to keep them at a distance. She succeeded in attracting a hunter who came to her assistance. He shot one of the bears and frightened the others away. Notes for Joseph Babcock:

W. W. Babcock believes that Joseph lived with his father for a time in New York City. Later moving to Smithfield or Smithville.

Joseph was a Blacksmith by trade.

Joseph moved his family to Geauga County Ohio about 1827. Joseph moved his family to Walworth County Wisconsin in about 1845 or 46. Following his son George who had migrated in 1843, His wife Charolette died there in 1853.

Joseph married Nancy Sherman in 1854. Purlee Baker, Justice of the Peace, performed the ceremony.

Joseph's second marriage was said to be troubled. Joseph committed suicide by hanging. One of his grandson's speculated that his suicide was brought on by financial troubles, although after settling his estate that did not seem feasible. His widow Nancy requested that the court appoint one or more of the heirs as administrators. The farm and" chattels' were sold at auction. After expenses and bills were paid there was still several hundred dollars left to the heirs.

Notes for George Franklin Babcock:

When George first came to Wisconsin in 1843, he worked for a Mr. Merritt in Spring Prairie. After a year he returned to Ohio to get his wife. He built a log house 2 1/2 miles east of Elkhorn. Funds were limited so he did not have enough money to buy doors or windows right away. After he had save 10 dollars he went to Milwaukee to buy them only to find out that the money was counterfeit. They nailed blankets over the doors and windows until George could save more money.

George was said to be a very strict man also a perfectionist.
